KMCH SPORTS: coverage area Cross Country teams begin competition today

West Delaware opens up at Mount Vernon

BY JON SWISHER – SPORTS DIRECTOR:

The first official competition date for High School Girls and Boys Cross Country was yesterday around the state. No coverage area teams were in action as 6 of our 12 schools will start their seasons this afternoon, including West Delaware who will travel to Mount Vernon.

West Delaware Girls thirteenth-year head coach Ben Moser talks about the positive outlook of his squad as the journey of a new season begins:

Coach Moser believes his team can be more competitive against some of the best teams in the WaMaC Conference this season:

On the boys side, Hawks 2nd-year head coach Nathan Goranson is intrigued to see just how good this group can be:

Coach Goranson is really proud of the work his team has put in:

With expected temps being in the low 70’s and humidity not being a factor around race time at 5pm, it’s an oddity for the annual late August meet that usually gets cancelled, this year will be the first one held since 2022. Eight other schools will be at Mt. Vernon competing against WD.

Cascade will be hosting an Eastern Iowa Quad at Jones County Central Park starting at 4:30pm.

Ed-Co will be entertaining for their annual Invitational at the Woods Edge Golf Course in Edgewood with a 6pm first gun, welcoming 13 other schools including Beckman Catholic, Maquoketa Valley and Starmont.
