Manchester Enforcing No Signs in City Right-of-Way

The City of Manchester has always had an ordinance prohibiting signs in the City’s right-of-way – but starting next month, they’ll be enforcing it a little harder than they have been in the past.

City Manager Tim Vick says it’s been a problem for awhile now, with the City Council discussing it at their meeting on Monday night.

The signs will start coming down from Manchester’s city right-of-way on October 1st.

This also applies to signs advertising such things as garage sales, church dinners and other events or announcements. See the official notice from the City below:

NOTICE FROM THE CITY OF MANCHESTER
Sign Placement and Removal

The City of Manchester regulates the placement of both permanent and temporary signs under Ordinance No. 165. These regulations are in place to protect public safety, maintain community appearance, and ensure fair use of property.

Important: Reminder:

Signs may not be placed in the public right-of-way, which includes areas along streets, sidewalks, and intersections.

Recently, there has been an increase in signs being wrongfully placed in the right-of-way. The right-of-way is generally defined as the grassy area between the street curb and the sidewalk. If a sidewalk is not present, the right-of-way typically extends 17 feet back from the street curb line.  Examples of illegally posted signs include, but are not limited to: political and campaign signs, painting and repair services, entrepreneurial businesses, real estate, garage sales, fundraisers, and community events.

Action Required:

·         Please be mindful of where you place signs.

·         All signs must follow the size and placement rules of Ordinance No. 165.

·         Any signs found in the right-of-way after October 1st will be removed by the City of Manchester without further notice.
