Free Radon Test Kits Available to Delaware County Residents

Do you know if your home has radon?

Delaware County Public Health is giving you a chance to find out. They’re offering free radon test kits to any Delaware County resident on a first-come, first-served basis through Wednesday.

Delaware County Public Health Manager Krystle DeShaw explains why testing for radon is important.

Radon can creep into your home through cracks, drains and other openings. Radon is the number one cause of lung cancer among those who have never smoked – it’s responsible for 21,000 lung cancer deaths nationwide each year. And that impact reaches locally as well. Jill Carpenter, Manchester resident and daughter of Paul Kammarmeyer, stresses the importance of testing after her father passed away from lung cancer at the age of 59. She shares, “After his diagnosis, it was confirmed through testing that my parent’s basement, where my dad spent a lot of time, was high in radon. If a test could save the life of a person, half as good as my dad, it would be a true blessing.” 

That’s why Delaware County Public Health is offering free radon test kits.

The radon test kits are available to pick up through Wednesday from 7:30 am to 5 pm at the Delaware County Public Health office (the east office building) on the Regional Medical Center campus in Manchester. No need to call ahead of time – just show up. First come, first served.
