Man Dies in Guttenberg Drowning

One person died in a drowning at Bussey Lake in Guttenberg on Wednesday morning.

Guttenberg Police say shortly before noon, the police chief found a flat-bottom boat adrift without anyone on board just north of the Bussey Lake boat ramp.

After a brief investigation at the boat ramp and talking with witnesses, police determined there had been a man in the water, but they weren’t able to find him.

The Guttenberg Fire Department began search efforts, looking for the man who possibly drowned. They were later assisted by the Iowa DNR using sonar technology.

Four hours later around 3:45 pm, they found the man’s body in the water. He is identified as a 79-year old man from Cedar Rapids, but his name is being withheld until family has been notified.

The Guttenberg Police Department extends its sincere thoughts to the family and everyone involved in the incident.

The Clayton County Sheriff’s Office, Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation, Clayton County Medical Examiner and Morris Funeral Homes also assisted at the scene.
