Update on Tuesday’s Incident at Lambert Elementary

West Delaware Superintendent Jen Vance released further information tonight regarding today’s incident at Lambert Elementary. Here is the second letter she shared with families, school staff and KMCH this evening:

Subject: Update and Clarification on Today’s Communication

Dear Families,

As a follow-up to the message we sent today regarding the situation near the Lambert Elementary playground, we want to provide additional clarification and outline the steps we are taking moving forward. We are aware that some inaccurate information has been shared, and we want to ensure everyone has the facts.

Here is what we know at this time:

  • The unfamiliar individual did not enter the playground.

  • Staff observed him outside the closed gates in the back bus lane area.

  • He did not have any direct interaction or conversation with students.

  • When approached by staff, the individual stated he was looking for his dog. When he could not describe the dog or produce a leash, staff immediately asked him to leave and notified law enforcement.

We are grateful for the additional information several individuals shared following our earlier message. Those tips helped us and law enforcement gain an even clearer description of the individual. The individual is a male, with dark hair, he also has dark facial hair and was wearing a hat, plaid jacket and sweat pants.

Below are our next steps and ongoing safety measures we will be implementing:

  • We will debrief the situation with our staff to identify any opportunities to strengthen our response procedures. Anytime we experience an unusual situation, we review and learn from it to ensure continuous improvement.

  • Staff will maintain extra vigilance during recess and at drop-off and dismissal times. Our supervision practices already ensure all students remain within direct sightlines. However, boundaries for recess activities will now be reviewed and tightened where needed.

  • As shared previously, we recently adopted new school safety protocols. We are currently training students in age-appropriate ways on these new procedures and will continue that training throughout the year.

  • Law enforcement will continue to monitor the area and share updates as appropriate.

Thank you for your continued support and partnership as we work together to maintain a safe and secure learning environment. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Sincerely,

Jen Vance

Superintendent
