Manchester’s Oldest Veteran Passes Away at 106

Manchester’s oldest veteran – and possibly its oldest resident – has passed away.

Mildred Frieda Fritz died Saturday at the Good Neighbor Home in Manchester. She was 106 years old.

Mildred was born on October 18, 1919 at the family home in Honey Creek Township. According to her obituary, she graduated as the valedictorian from Greeley High School in 1937. She started nurses training at Finley Hospital in Dubuque and concluded her training at Cook County Hospital in Chicago. From there, enlisted as a nurse in the U.S. Army Air Corps – serving her country for three years during World War II. Her final years of nursing were spent working at the Delaware County Hospital and the Good Neighbor Home.

Mildred participated in the Honor Flight in 2017 at the age of 98 and received her Quilt of Valor when she turned 100.

Good Neighbor Society CEO Katie Edgington says Mildred was their oldest resident on campus.

Services for Mildred will be held this Friday, with burial with military rites in Manchester’s Oakland Cemetery.
