Two New Year’s Hikes Planned in Delaware County to Kick Off 2026

You can kick off the new year on an active note by participating in one of a couple different hikes.

The Iowa DNR is offering a First Day Hike on New Year’s Day on Thursday, January 1st at Backbone State Park. The hike begins at 10 am, with everyone asked to meet at the Old Office just east of the East Gate. Join a 1.25-mile hike from the office area through the East Gate along the Backbone Ridge to the Backbone Trail. Enjoy spectacular views of the river valley on both sides and a likely glimpse of the bald eagles that hang out over the river. The hike will take place on the park road, which is not plowed during the winter so conditions may be slick. Please dress for the weather and all pets must be on a leash.

Delaware County Conservation also invites you on a hike at Bailey’s Ford Park on New Year’s Day on Thursday, January 1st. The hike will begin at 10 am at the Bailey’s Ford Nature Center, with a short hike through the park followed by some hot chocolate and activities in the nature center. If you are interested, RSVP by calling 927-3410 or emailing delawareccb@gmail.com by December 29th.
