Sherrill Man Sentenced for Involvement in Iowa Drug Ring

A Dubuque County man has been sentenced to federal prison for his role in an Iowa drug ring.

49-year old Jason Michael Weiland of Sherrill was sentenced on Thursday to over 21 years in federal prison. 

Weiland received the prison term after pleading guilty last June to possession with intent to distribute 500 grams of a mixture and substance containing methamphetamine, and 50 grams of pure methamphetamine, commonly known as “ice.”    

Evidence at the sentencing and plea hearings showed that in December 2024, law enforcement officers tried to stop the car Weiland was driving as he returned to Dubuque from Missouri.  Weiland led police on a high-speed chase and eventually crashed into a ditch. Officers took Weiland into custody and found over 280 grams of pure methamphetamine in his car. Weiland intended to sell the meth to people in the Dubuque area. He had been travelling to Missouri to pick up large quantities of meth to sell in the Dubuque area. In total, the court found Weiland responsible for over seven kilograms of pure methamphetamine.

Weiland has a prior 2000 federal conviction for unlawful user of controlled substances in possession of firearms and conspiracy to distribute controlled substances, specifically methamphetamine, cocaine, LSD, psilocybin mushrooms, and marijuana.  

Weiland was sentenced to 262 months in prison by United States District Court Chief Judge C.J. Williams. He must also serve a five-year term of supervised release after the prison term. There is no parole in the federal system.
