Taylor Experiences U.S. Naval Academy Summer Seminar

Summer is coming to an end for students, with the new school year starting on Monday.

And one local high school student had a unique experience this summer, getting an opportunity to participate in the U.S. Naval Academy Summer Seminar.

The United States has five federal service academies that provide a tuition-free, four-year bachelor’s degree in exchange for a mandatory active-duty service commitment usually lasting five years. These elite institutions train students to become commissioned officers in the U.S. Armed Forces.

Hannah Taylor of Manchester says the seminar gave her a taste of what life in a military academy might look like – a goal she’s pursuing as she heads into her senior year.

Taylor says getting to meet the senators was a great experience.

Senator Grassley told KMCH he was proud to have an opportunity to visit with Taylor.

And Taylor says visiting with Senator Ernst about her and her daughter’s military experience was helpful too.

Taylor says she loved her time at the Naval Academy Summer Seminar, though it was challenging.

So what does it take to apply for a U.S. military academy?

She says the application process can take a little time.

Taylor will start her senior year at Beckman Catholic on Monday. After graduation, she’s aiming for the academy – but if that doesn’t work out, she has a back-up plan.

The offices of Senators Grassley and Ernst will be hosting two virtual informational events for Iowa students interested in applying to the U.S. Military Service Academies in the fall of 2027 or 2028. The U.S. Service Academy Virtual Informational Nights will be held on Monday, August 31st and Tuesday, September 1st from 6 to 8 pm. The meetings are open to high school freshmen, sophomores and juniors who would like more information about attending a U.S. military academy. Parents, guardians and high school guidance counselors are also welcome to attend. RSVP to receive a link to the event. Please RSVP directly to academy_nominations@grassley.senate.gov or by calling 515-288-1145.
