Delaware County Public Health Encourages Residents to Stay Informed About Iowa Measles Activity

Delaware County Public Health is encouraging residents to be aware of measles activity occurring in parts of Iowa and to take steps to protect themselves, their families and their communities.

At this time, there are no confirmed measles cases in Delaware County. However, Iowa Health and Human Services is currently responding to a measles outbreak in southern Iowa. As of Monday, Iowa HHS reported 17 confirmed measles cases in 2026, with evidence of person-to-person spread. 

Measles is a highly contagious viral illness that spreads through the air when an infected person coughs, sneezes or breathes. Symptoms typically include fever, cough, runny nose, red or watery eyes, followed by a rash that generally begins on the face and spreads to the rest of the body. 

DCPH says measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine provides strong protection against measles. Two doses of the MMR vaccine are 97% effective against measles. 

Residents are encouraged to:

• Check their vaccination records to make sure they are up-to-date.
• Talk with their healthcare provider or local public health department if they are unsure whether they are protected.
• Pay attention to current measles activity and potential exposure locations identified by Iowa HHS.
• Know the symptoms of measles and seek medical guidance if symptoms develop following a potential exposure.

If you believe you have been exposed to measles and develop symptoms, call your healthcare provider before going to the clinic or emergency department. Calling ahead allows healthcare personnel to take precautions to protect patients and staff.
