Linn County Sheriff’s Office Warns of New Phone Scam

The Linn County Sheriff’s Office has received multiple reports from residents regarding a new phone scam.
Fraudsters are contacting individuals shortly after a family member has been arrested, targeting them when they are most vulnerable.
Authorities say the caller claims to be an official from Linn County Corrections. They offer to release the family member from jail for a specific fee. The caller claims the payment covers the cost of an electronic ankle monitor and enrollment in an education program required for release.
The Linn County Sheriff’s Office says they will never call you to demand immediate payment over the phone for release programs. If you receive a suspicious call, hang up immediately. Contact the Sheriff’s Office or the jail directly using an official phone number to verify your family member’s status. Never give out credit card numbers, wire money, or buy gift cards in response to an unsolicited phone call.
