Area High School Baseball/Softball; 2014 Season

By Jon Swisher-Sports Director:

The summer sports season starts up for a majority of our area baseball and softball teams in the KMCH Sports coverage area tonight. It also marks night number one of a new broadcast season here from KMCH Sports as the West Delaware baseball team travels to Petrakis Park in Dubuque to take on non-conference foe Dubuque Wahlert.

A new era of Hawks baseball began when practices started back on May 5th as WD 2007 graduate Nate Lahr is the new head coach of the program. Lahr takes over for current Athletics Director Mike Morrison who guided the program for 21 seasons with 530 career wins and a class 3A state title in Lahr’s senior year.

The Hawks are coming off a 23-15 campaign in which they lost 7 players due to graduation. Coach Lahr says a quality group of players with varsity experience return to lead the way:

LAHR2 5-27

Lahr mentions the strengths and concerns he sees at this early point in the season:

LAHR4 5-27

An advantage Lahr has had is having the opportunity to coach the same young men he had at the sophomore level the past couple years:

LAHR1 5-27

Lahr coached under Morrison as an varsity assistant in 2010 and had been the sophomore coach the past 3 seasons. He says still having Mike around to answer questions or provide experienced input is a huge plus:

LAHR3 5-27

Another bonus is the rest of the coaching staff remained in tact with the only addition being first-year high school PE teacher Chad Osler taking Lahr’s spot:

LAHR5 5-27

Dubuque Wahlert is a very familiar non-conference opponent for the Hawks as the two teams have met every year since the mid-2000’s and twice a few times playing each other in the post-season. The Golden Eagles finished 26-13 last season with a Mississippi Valley Conference title. The Hawks won last year’s meeting in Manchester 8-0, in game number 1. Coach Lahr knows despite the lopsided win last year, Wahlert will be good a test for his squad:

LAHR6 5-27

All the action can be heard here tonight from KMCH Sports with Sports Director Jon Swisher and Bill Logan starting before 7pm with a JV/Varsity doubleheader scheduled to start at 5pm

In other area contests tonight;

The two-time defending class 2A champion Beckman Blazers will host North Scott inside Commercial Club Park on Jenk Field.

Calamus-Wheatland @ East Buchanan
North-Lin hosts Bellevue Marquette
Cascade @ Monticello
Edgewood-Colesburg @ Springville
Western Dubuque @ Waverly-Shell Rock

The West Delaware Hawks will begin their season tonight, on the road in Oelwein. Eleventh-year head coach Kevin Schuchmann has a bevy of experience back from a 25-15 squad a year ago that only lost 1 senior:

Coach Schuchmann says a majority of the defensive slots are filled right now but there will be some flexibility in the lineup:

With the ever changing spring weather the last few weeks, it had an impact on the Hawks practices, Coach Schuchmann talks about those effects and the minor change to this first week of games:

The JV/Varsity doubleheader in Oelwein tonight gets underway at 6pm. We’ll have score updates live from KMCH Sports throughout the night. The first West Delaware softball broadcast will be the doubleheader at DeWitt on Thursday night.

The area softball schedule officially started up last night with Beckman losing 1-0 to Dubuque Senior.
