Three area wrestling teams took part in the Battle of Waterloo inside Young Arena Friday and Saturday. West Delaware went 1-2 on Friday defeating Woodbury Central 44-33, and losing to West Des Moines Valley and Lisbon setting them up in the 6th place bracket on Saturday. The Hawks started the day with a 40-35 win over ADM Adel. After trailing 35-13 after nine matches the Hawks went on to win the next five matches four coming with bonus points before junior Owen Ward finished the dual with a 7-5 win to seal the dual win for the Hawks. They then took on 16th ranked Crestwood in the their second match and lost that dual 42-40 with the dual again coming down to the final match. The Hawks finished the 2014 portion of their season with a 42-30 loss to Denver Tripoli to finish in 3rd place in the sixth place bracket.
Western Dubuque also went 1-2 on Friday with a win over Mason City 46-25 before falling to Iowa City West and top ranked in Class 1A Alburnett to advance to the 4th place bracket in Saturday’s action. The Bobcats went 2-1 with a 36-30 win over Don Bosco and a 43-30 victory over Clear Lake, their only blemish on the day was a 40-31 loss to Waverly Shell Rock.
The Independence Mustangs walked through their bracket on Friday going 3-0 defeating Waterloo Columbus, Don Bosco, and North Scott which earned the Mustangs a spot in the championship on Saturday with three of the best teams in the state. The Mustangs went 0-3 in the championship round as they fell to Union 49-21, Cedar Rapids Prairie 39-26, and top ranked in Class 2A Davenport Assumption 37-18.
