HS Softball/Baseball; Monday night 6-2 Results, Tuesday night 6-3 Games

By Jon Swisher-Sports Director:

The class 3A 11th ranked West Delaware Hawks won their first two games at home in the new season last night in Manchester over Maquoketa. Solid pitching, great defense and timely hitting helped the Hawks improve their mark to 6-0 overall and 4-o in WaMaC conference play. Head coach Kevin Schuchmann talked about the positives in his mind about the doubleheader sweep:

The two W’s were also a part of a milestone night for the veteran coach. The second win resulted in the 800th career coaching victory in his 29th season. He becomes the 27th head varsity coach in Iowa girls softball history to reach the 800-win mark. Coach Schuchmann modestly denied much credit for the success focusing instead on the support and community involvement of the two schools he’s been at:

Schuchmann started his head coaching career at Ed-Co in 1986 then made the switch to West Delaware in 2004. He became just the 13th active coach to achieve this milestone. The Hawks will be back in action on the road Wednesday night in Oxford taking on Clear Creek-Amana.

In baseball tonight;

The West Delaware Hawks open up their home schedule at Exide Field inside the Beckman Complex hosting Maquoketa.

The Hawks come in with a 2-1 overall mark and are 1-1 in WaMaC conference play. Head coach Nate Lahr was mostly pleased with the play of his squad last week but the main issue involves scoring only 6 runs in 3 games:

LAHR2 6-3

After 15 plus years of taking care of the WD high school baseball diamond former head coach and current AD Mike Morrison has been relieved of duties by Coach Lahr who is settling in to the new role of head groundskeeper as well:

LAHR1 6-3

The Hawks are slated to play 6 games this week, staying at home Wednesday night for non-conference opponent Oelwein before heading to Independence on Thursday night.
