HS Softball; West Delaware in Fort Dodge State of Mind

By Jon Swisher-Sports Director:

The class 4A 10th-ranked 30-7 West Delaware softball team opens up quarterfinal play this afternoon at the 2014 State Softball Tournament in Fort Dodge. The Hawks will battle No. 11 27-12 Norwalk in the 1:30pm game in day one of the tourney inside the Rogers Sports Complex. It’s the Hawks 10th summer trip to state and 13th overall since softball started at WD in the early 1970’s. It will be the first appearance since 2012 and 5th in 11 seasons all under head coach Kevin Schuchmann. The veteran Coach Schuchmann is making his 8th overall trip in 29 seasons, he says the experience of making the journey to Fort Dodge before definitely helps with getting adjusted to the bigger stage:

The team, coaches, parents and some family members took part in a State send-off gathering at Sill Field yesterday evening. Coach Schuchmann knows his squad is very thankful for the great support:

Senior pitcher Hannah Cole sums up what that support means to herself and her teammates:

COLE4 7-21

Cole and senior shortstop Reann McCarty share their thoughts on the third trip to state for the both of them:

COLE1 7-21        MCCARTY1 7-21

The Hawks earned the right to travel to Fort Dodge with that 11-inning thrilling win over Waverly-Shell Rock last Tuesday night, Cole talks about her emotions and how her team pulled it out:

COLE2 7-21

Coach Schuchmann didn’t want his team just practicing without a game like setting all week so he set up a scrimmage with class 3A State participant, Center Point-Urbana:

For Coach Schuchmann, the majority of the week was spent trying to gather a scouting report on the first round opponent, Norwalk:

Cole has played with some of the Norwalk players through her travel team experience:

COLE3 7-21

Cole says the State Tournament dream is not one to be taken lightly or for granted even for girls who play in a traditionally strong program:

COLE5 7-21

All the coverage from Fort Dodge on KMCH Sports with Sports Director Jon Swisher and Bill Logan will start up around 1:15pm this afternoon.
