RAGBRAI Passes Through Area Towns

RAGBRAI wrapped up in Guttenberg on Saturday. Thousands of bicycle riders spent seven days pedaling across Iowa. After a rainy, cold and wet start to the day on Friday, riders slowly made their way to Independence for an overnight stop. One rider told KMCH Friday was the hardest ride in his eight years on RAGBRAI. But the sun came out and the riders enjoyed the food, live music and good company Independence had to offer. Nine-year old Henry came all the way from New York City to take part in his second RAGBRAI.

Dave Sylvester of Philadelphia was riding on RAGBRAI to honor his friend who passed away on 9-11 in the Twin Towers. Sylvester had written a book on his many bicycle treks across the country and across continents, but this was his first time riding across Iowa on RAGBRAI.

After their stay in Independence, RAGBRAI riders finished out their trip passing through Winthrop, Lamont, Strawberry Point, Edgewood and Garber before dipping their bike tires in the Mississippi River in Guttenberg.
