HS Baseball; Beckman Falls In 2A Title Game

By Jon Swisher-Sports Director:

The Beckman Blazers baseball season was ended Saturday afternoon inside Principal Park in Des Moines. Beckman’s two-year reign as class 2A state champions was stopped by North Polk with a 2-0 score in the title game. It was the third meeting in a row for the two programs in the 2A final, with the Blazers winning the first two contests by a total of 3 runs. The Blazers offense was stifled by the Comets senior pitcher who held them to just four hits while striking out 10, they also left seven runners on base. Defensively Beckman committed 3 errors which 2 of them resulted in each run scoring. Junior pitcher Connor Klostermann, who ended the campaign with a 7-1 record, had a solid outing going a complete six innings in the loss, giving up two runs — none earned — on seven hits, walking two and striking out six. The loss ended a 17-game postseason winning streak for the Blazers who finish their fine season with a record of 29-14 and a second consecutive WaMaC East division title. It ended with their 16th trip to state as they improved their mark in state tournament games to 27-11, which is third all-time for most wins by any team in all four classes. Their third title game in a row and 4th in 6 seasons was the 12th in program history with a 5-7 record now. Beckman says goodbye to eight seniors; Ben Loeffelholz, Sam Deutmeyer, Mitch Steger, Hunter Saber, Zac Lyon, Riley Vorwald, Tony Anstoetter and Tyler Knepper who were all apart of continuing the outstanding tradition of Beckman Baseball the last few seasons with their contributions at the varsity level.
