Eunice L. Corcoran – West Des Moines, formerly of Waterloo, Independence and Fairbank

Eunice L. Corcoran, 93, of West Des Moines, Iowa, and formerly of Waterloo, Independence and Fairbank, Iowa died Wednesday, August 13, 2014 at the Bright Kavanagh Hospice Home in Des Moines, Iowa. 

Eunice was born on August 25, 1920, near Dewar, Iowa the daughter of Alvie C. and Marguerite K. (Hodkins) Schmitt. She was raised on a farm in the Independence, Iowa area and graduated from the Independence High School. On August 25, 1942 she was united in marriage to Elmer F. Corcoran and was blessed with nine children. She and Elmer farmed in the Fairbank area until Elmer’s death in 1987. Eunice was well known for her artistic talent. She painted many beautiful oil and watercolor paintings. She was once asked what her greatest accomplishment was, she replied “My nine children.” In her later years she quilted many quilts and was very proud of them loving to show them off to many visitors. 

She is survived by her children; Jerry (Marcia) Corcoran, Eatonville, WA, Dennis Corcoran, Howell, MI, Brian Corcoran, Fairbank, IA, Timothy Corcoran, Hudson, IN, Kathleen Tournier, Waterloo, IA, Margaret Benge, Ankeny, IA, Michael “Nick” Corcoran, Altoona, IA, Mark Corcoran, Somonauk, IL, and Laura Benge, Baxter, IA. Twenty Seven Grandchildren, Five Step Grandchildren, Twenty Nine Great Grandchildren, Three Step Great Grandchildren, two sisters; Janice (Chuck) Devens, Dubuque, IA, Joan (Gerald) McCalley, Independence, IA, and a brother; Mike Schmitt, Independence, IA. 

Eunice was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters; Rita Michael, Kathleen Roberts, and two brothers; Richard “Dick” Schmitt, and Donald “Doc” Schmitt. 

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 AM Monday at St. John’s Catholic Church, Independence, Iowa with Rev. Don Plamondon officiating. Burial will be in the St. John’s Catholic Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 7 PM Sunday and from 8 to 10 AM Monday at the Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory, Independence, Iowa. A rosary will be recited at 4 PM Sunday and a parish vigil service will be held at 6:30 PM Sunday at the funeral home.
