HS Football; Area Teams Ready for Season Openers

The high school football season starts for all our area teams tonight with week one play. Our featured West Delaware game has the Hawks hosting their highway 20 WD rivals with Western Dubuque coming to Brown Field in the first non-district contest. Eleventh season head coach Doug Winkowitsch talks about his team with high expectations coming into this season as the Hawks are a top-ten favorite in every preseason class 3A poll:

The Bobcats are under new direction with first-year head coach Justin Penner at the helm. Penner is graduate of the university of Dubuque and has nine years of head coaching experience, five at Carroll Kuemper and the past four at Mason City. Coach Penner talks about the transition after being named the replacement for Brian Kuhle, in early July, who took an administration job at Dubuque Hempstead:

After college, Coach Penner spent time at Beckman as an assistant coach, that experience makes him familiar with the area and the Hawks:

West Delaware won last years’ meeting in Epworth 56-21 in week three. The battle of WD’s in Manchester will start around 7:30pm after the Sophomore contest at 5pm. Our area online and playback game of the week has the class A Ed-Co Vikings traveling to class 1A Clayton Ridge in Guttenberg.     Fifth-year head coach James Rochford is ready for his program to take a step closer in contending for the postseason withimproved play:


The Eagles, who won the meeting last season in Edgewood 59-6, have been a familiar non-district opponent for the Vikings the past several seasons, Coach Rochford shares his thoughts on them:
