Carl Anderson – Oelwein

Carl Anderson, 86, of Oelwein passed away on Sunday September 21, 2014. Visitation will be from 3-7 PM on Thursday September 25, 2014 at the Geilenfeld Funeral Home in Oelwein. Funeral Services will be at 10:30 AM on Friday September 26, 2014 at Zion Lutheran Church in Oelwein. He will be laid to rest in Long Grove Cemetery at Maynard. A memorial fund has been established. Carl Oscar Anderson was born on November 28, 1927 in rural Congerville, Illinois, and was the son of Oscar and Mabel (Swanson) Anderson. Carl passed away Sunday afternoon, September 21, at the family farm. Carl and his parents moved to Deer Creek, IL in 1936 where they farmed the Julia Wyss’s farm. Carl was baptized and confirmed at St. Mark Lutheran Church in Washington, IL. He attended grade school at Congerville, the Danfort one-room schoolhouse at Deer Creek, and then graduated from Deer Creek High School.
After graduation, Carl enlisted in the U.S Army in May 1947, completed his basic training at Ft. Knox, KY, and was honorably discharged Oct. 1948. Carl attained the rank of corporal, with a qualification of Rifle M-1 Sharp Shooter. Following his military service, Carl returned to Illinois and began farming with his father.
On June 25, 1955, Carl was united in marriage to Wilma E. Rosebraugh in Charleston, IL. Together they farmed near Deer Creek and Chenoa, IL. In 1962, Carl & Wilma purchased their farm at Oelwein, IA and farmed until retirement in 1992, but remained living on the farm with his wife Wilma, tending to their large vegetable and floral gardens and beloved cats and faithful dog “Laddie”.
Carl loved baseball and basketball almost as much as farming. He coached many Little League baseball players in Oelwein and elementary grade basketball players for Stanley school. Carl was a lifelong Chicago White Sox fan and belonged to the National Trapper’s Assoc., traveling all over the U.S. to attend conventions and add to his collection. Carl was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Oelwein where he served as an usher.
Carl is survived by his wife of 59 years, Wilma; 4 Sons, Greg (Diane) of Oro Valley, AZ, Eric of Manchester, IA, Bruce of Onalaska, WI, Henry (Suzanne) of Baxter and 1 daughter Rosetta (special friend Matt Kula) of Oelwein, IA; nine grandchildren: Jamie, Brad, Kelsey, Alex, Evan, Isaac, Levi, Lucas and Emma; 2 great grandsons: Dylan and Damian; sister-in-law Virginia Goecker; many nieces, nephews, and relatives here and in Sweden.
Carl was preceded in death by his parents Oscar and Mabel; and his siblings: George, Roy, Rosemary and Robert.
