David Douglas Harper, 81, of Manchester, Iowa, died on October 12, 2014, at his home. He was born on June 21, 1933, the son of Bernard and Evelyn (McDonald) Harper. Dave was raised and educated in the Waterloo area and graduated from Waterloo West High School. He served in the Army from 1953-55.
On February 14, 1954, Dave was united in marriage to Marlene “Marty” Smith in Waterloo, while home on furlough from the Army. Two children were born to this union. In 1957 they moved to Manchester. Dave worked for Retail Credit before beginning his insurance career at the Tip Coltman Insurance Agency in 1960. In 1967 he established the Dave Harper Agency.
Dave enjoyed golfing, fishing and making “Oysters Harperfeller”. He was a clever cartoonist, well known for his infectious sense of humor, and over the years made hundreds of caricature golf trophies for his golfing buddies. Dave liked watching the Chicago Cubs, Chicago Bears, and the Iowa Cubs. He was a past member of the Jaycees, a 50+ year member of the Manchester Lions Club, and a past president of the Independent Insurance Agents of Iowa.
Survivors include his two children, Laurie (Joe) O’Leary of Cedar Rapids, and Jeff (Carol) Harper of Manchester; five grandchildren, Josh (Sara) O’Leary, Jordan (Rachelle) O’Leary, Jacob O’Leary, Aaron Harper, and Sara Harper; two great-grandchildren, Jack and Tess O’Leary; one brother, James (Bev) Harper of Sequim, Washington; a sister, Marilyn Cleland of Golden Valley, Minnesota; and his partner and companion for the past four years, Ann Bernabe.
Dave was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife, Marty in 2009.
Memorial Service: 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 16, 2014, at Leonard-Muller Funeral Home, Manchester, Iowa.
