Second round of the high school football playoffs took place last night.
Three of the five KMCH area teams involved earned victories including West Delaware, Beckman and Central Elkader.
The 6th-ranked Hawks earned their 25th playoff win, 28-14, over 2md-ranked Solon after a back and forth battle until the 2nd half after trailing 14-12 at halftime. WD outscored the Spartans 16-0 in the final two quarters, with Great defense and big offensive plays. Hawks head Doug Winkowitsch commented after the game just how ready his squad was for Solon in the rematch and how important the return of Coy Roussell proved to be:
Roussell had been out since week # 7 battling mono and scored on his second carry with a 47 yard TD. The Hawks improved their mark to 10-1 and will face Cedar Rapids Xavier Friday night in Cedar Rapids.
The top-ranked Wildcats fell behind early and their comeback bid came up short to avoid the upset falling 22-20 to Denver. Four Wildcat turnovers and seven penalties were big reasons for the loss as was the outstanding defensive play of Denver who stymied MV’s offense like no one else this season. Maquoketa Valley ended their sensational run with a 10-1 mark.
The Blazers improved to 9-2 and got their 12th playoff win with a 28-20 victory over Highway 136 rival 8th-ranked Cascade on the road last night. The Blazers rallied from a 14-0 Halftime deficit. Beckman prevented a go-ahead 2-point conversion leading 21-20 late in the fourth quarter and then recovered an on-side kick and tacked on a touchdown with 1:13 left in the game to secure the win. The Blazers will travel to play Hampton Dumont Friday night.
Central improved to 11-0 with a 44-20 win, beating Northwood-Kinsett. The Warriors will host HLV of Victor Friday night.
