HS Volleyball: West Delaware Headed Back To State Tournament

By Jon Swisher-Sports Director:

The class 4A 2nd-ranked West Delaware Volleyball team improved their record to 43-2, with a 3-0 sweep of Dubuque Wahlert last night in Cascade for the Region 6 championship and a berth in the 2014 State Volleyball Tournament. The Hawks dominated the first two sets winning 25-14 and 25-12 with the third game being a little closer before they closed it out with a 25-20 victory. Nineteenth-year Hawks head coach Brett Mather was thrilled with the effort his squad showed from the start of the match:

MATHER1 11-5

Senior Emily Thole says the environment created by the orange and black faithful didn’t go unnoticed by the team as usual:

THOLE2 11-5

It was the 13th regional final for the Hawks program since 2002 as they improved their record in those matches to 9-4 giving them their 9th state tourney appearance since 2003 and third straight trip. Thole and her teammates are thrilled with the opportunity to make it back to state but know the ultimate goal is still in front of them and it will take focus and more hard work:

Senior Haley Morrison says the process is familiar and they know how they need to approach it:

Senior Marly Boies comments on the close-knit group of 15 players who make-up the varsity squad and how it only helps them play as one:

The Hawks earned the 2nd seed in the class 4A bracket and will face 32-9 Indianola in quarterfinal play next Tuesday afternoon inside the US Cellular Center in downtown Cedar Rapids at 2pm.
