The class 4A 2nd-ranked West Delaware Volleyball team improved their season mark to 44-2 with the program’s first state tournament win since 2010 and 10th all-time win at State, improving that record to 10-8. It happened with a 3-0 sweep of 7th-rated Indianola yesterday afternoon inside the US Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids on opening day of the 2014 State Volleyball Tournament. The Hawks jumped out to a quick start with a 25-15 game one victory. The Indians fought back, making the 2nd and 3rd sets closer with the Hawks securing 25-20 and 25-19 wins. Head coach Brett Mather feels relieved that his team was able to come out and play well for the most part to end the three state match losing streak dating back to the title tilt in 2010:
The Hawks enjoyed the moment but realize bigger goals lie ahead striving for the program’s first ever state championship, Coach Mather is happy with the fact they have the opportunity to keep on working to achieve that accomplishment:
The Hawk faithful that were able to make the trip to downtown Cedar Rapids didn’t disappoint in numbers. Coach Mather was especially proud of the effort the student section showed by creating a Red, White and Blue theme in honor of Veterans Day:
Speaking of sportsmanship, the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union and the Iowa Farm Bureau presented their annual Fan Sportsmanship award before the match to a deserving member of the WD community who has displayed being an avid supporter and fan of the program. This years’ award recipient chose by the members of the Hawk varsity squad was former coach, current teacher and KMCH Sports WD volleyball color commentator Joan Salow.
