HS Girls Bball: WD Hawks and Other Area Teams Open up Season Tonight

By Jon Swisher-Sports Director:

The class 4A 15th-ranked West Delaware Hawks girls basketball team officially begins their new season tonight when they travel to play South Tama. The Hawks are coming off of one of the best seasons’ in program history with a 17-6 mark and 2nd place finish in their WaMaC conference division. Forty-eighth year head coach Harold Shepherd begins his fifth season at West Delaware, he talks about the slow transition to the start of preseason practice because of the successful run for the Volleyball team at State and comments on how his experienced squad is shaping up:

SHEP1 11-25

The Hawks were for a majority of the season after their incredible 13-2 start and 11-game winning streak from mid-December to mid-January. Coach Shep enjoyed his first winning campaign as a Hawk but knows rankings and how they did last season don’t really matter from this point forward:

SHEP2 11-25

The Hawks lost 42-40 in that Hall of Pride scrimmage at home Saturday night against class 5A 2014 state semi-finalist Waterloo West. It will be a out-of-division meeting tonight in Tama as South Tama rejoins the WaMaC conference and gives the West side an even 8 teams. The Trojans and Hawks haven’t faced each other since the 2005-06 season when South Tama was still in the conference. Since then they have called 2 different leagues their home, first the Little Hawkeye for 5 years then the North Iowa Cedar West division for 3 years. South Tama was 17-5 and won the NICL-West last season.  All the coverage from KMCH Sports will start up around 7:30pm live on KMCH and KMCH.com with Sports Director Jon Swisher and Bill Logan.
