Richard “Dick” Saunders, 76, formerly of Manchester, Iowa, passed away on Friday, November 28, 2014, at his residence in Cedar Rapids. He was born on July 28, 1938, in Hopkinton, the son of Clifford and Darlene (Molar) Saunders. Dick graduated from Hopkinton high School with the class of 1955.
On November 15, 1959, Dick was united in marriage to Constance Gibbs at the United Methodist Church in Manchester. Three children were born to this union. Dick worked for Rockwell Collins in Cedar Rapids for 38 years. After his retirement he did contract work for Rockwell Collins in Manchester. For many years he ran the Saunders Gun and Machine Shop. He was well known for his knowledge of 17 caliber rifles.
After retiring, Dick enjoyed riding thousands of miles on his recumbent bicycles and tricycles for exercise and enjoyment. He had the opportunity to take many trips throughout the United States and Canada.
Dick is survived by his wife of 55 years, Constance of Cedar Rapids; a son, Rodney ( Thresa) Saunders of Lahaina, Hawaii; two daughters, Candy (Michael) Flynn of Middleton, Wisconsin, and Penny (Jerry) Zaruba of Cedar Rapids; two grandchildren, Andrew Saunders of Salt Lake City, Utah, and Elizabeth Saunders of Oakland, California; one brother, Phil (Roberta) Saunders; two sisters, Cheryl (Robert) Husk and Rosemary (Sam) Bacon; and two sisters-in-law, Patsy (Ken) Deerberg and Kathy Gibbs.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his parents-in-law, Leslie and Nina Gibbs; and a brother-in-law, Michael Gibbs.
At his request, Dick will be cremated and will not have any services.
