Black Hawk County Landfill Planning Expansion

A $5 million expansion at the Black Hawk County Landfill should reduce closures due to high winds – a situation that has led to delays in garbage pickups. State officials recently cleared the new, 55-foot-deep pit called Cell W-2 for business. It will take in waste from Black Hawk, Bremer and Fayette counties. It also will serve five communities in Grundy County and two in Buchanan County. The old cell is nearly full. Waste is dumped on top of a mound more than 30 feet above grade. The landfill would have to close on windy days because newly dumped trash would blow off the top. Administrator Brett Vette for the county Solid Waste Management Commission says officials think the new cell will last at least eight years. (AP)
