Aloysius “Al” Merkes – Dubuque

Aloysius “Al” Peter Merkes, 80 of Dubuque, passed away on Monday, December 1, 2014 at his home surrounded by his family.  Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m., Friday, December 5, 2014 at Resurrection Catholic Church.  Family will greet friends 3:00 pm. – 8:00 pm., Thursday, December 4, 2014 at Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home, 3860 Asbury Rd, with a 7:30 p.m., scripture service.  Entombment with Military Honors by Dubuque American Legion Post #6 will be at Mt. Calvary Cemetery.

Al was born January 2, 1934 in New Vienna, Iowa, the son of Peter and Margret (Reis) Merkes.  He served in the US Army during the Korean War.  Al married Theresa Offermann on November 24, 1959 at St. Francis Basilica in Dyersville.  He was a farmer, a member of Resurrection Catholic Church, like to dance, playing cards with family and friends, and puttering around in his shed with many projects.

Survivors include his wife, Theresa; children, Paul (Valerie), Mark (Terri), Pat (Sandy), Mike (Tammy), Roger (Tina), and Kevin (Cindy) Merkes; 28 grandchildren, and 9 great-grandchildren; siblings, Peter, Arnie (Jackie), John (Lou) Merkes, Theresa Foxen, and Mary Jane (Joel) Glennon.

Al was preceded in death by his parents and 4 siblings, Art, Katie, Clara, and Ambrose.
