Several area wrestling teams kicked off their 2014-15 season’s on Saturday as it was the first day of tournaments around the state.
In Manchester West Delaware hosted the 2nd annual Bob Murphy Invitational inside the Seedorff Gymnasium. The youthful Hawk lineup finished in fifth place out of the six team field and 10 of the Hawks 13 wrestlers competed in their first tournament as varsity starters. Junior Owen Ward was the Hawks lone champion as he held of Devin Stortz of Decorah 5-4 for the 132 pound title. Senior Logan Reilly and junior Bennett Cole both lost one match on the day good for second place at their respective weight classes. In Independence the Mustangs hosted a 14 team tournament that featured some of the best teams in the state of Iowa and one of the premier teams from Minnesota. The host Mustangs had 11 wrestlers place in the top 8 which was good for a 3rd place finish behind Apple Valley (MN) and 4th ranked in Class 3A Cedar Rapids Prairie. At 152 pounds Independence senior and Iowa State recruit Chase Straw took home a tournament title as he went 3-0 including a decisive 9-3 win over 8th ranked in Class 3A Toby Northrup from Linn Mar in the championship match. Four area teams participated in the Monticello Guilford Invitational in Monticello on Saturday. Ed-Co, Monticello, Beckman, and Anamosa finished 4th through 7th respectively but only seven points separated the four teams. Ed-Co got individual titles from Killian Welsh, Carter Aulwes, and Sawyer Amling. Junior Dalton Husmann and Senior Peyton Paddock won individual titles for the host Panther, while Tyler Frasher and Spencer Hinrichsen finished atop the podium for Anamosa. At the Dubuque Invitational Western Dubuque finished is 2nd place and had three individual champs as Collin Koerperich, Braden Birt, and Max Lyon took home gold medals for the Bobcats. For Complete Results Click the Link to Track Wrestling.
