WaMaC divisional play got underway last night in girls and boys basketball. The West Delaware teams played DeWitt Central. The boys in DeWitt battled the class 3A 9th-ranked Sabers until the end after a slow start trailing 15-4 after the first quarter. The Hawks pulled to within 3 points with 6 seconds remaining but the Sabers went on to sink 4 more free throws to clinch the 59-52 win. Hawks head coach Matt Uthoff talks about his teams’ effort:
The Hawk girls had a rough shooting night at home and dropped their first game of the season 28-26.
A wildly entertaining contest took place in Epworth in boys’ play. The class 2A 3rd-ranked Beckman Blazers pulled off the road upset over the 4A 10th-rated Bobcats in overtime 66-63. A last second half court heave, by Blazer senior post player Josh Gehling after a missed shot by Western Dubuque, captured the victory for Beckman over their in-county rivals.

The West Delaware Boys and Girls bowling teams hosted their first home meet Tuesday afternoon against the Waverly GoHawks and came away victorious.
The West Delaware girls had a team score of 2803 to Waverly’s 2435. Led by senior Katilyn Salow with a solid series of 456 (233-223), she was followed closely by Junior Hope Mozingo who rolled a 454 series (233-221) other scores rounding off the hawks individual round were, Andrea Salow 497 series (159-218), Kaitlyn Werner 329 series (180-149), Chelsie Mangold 328 series (155-173) and Hayley Hildebrand 293 series (131-162).
The boys won with a score of 3143 to Waverly’s 3136. The Hawks had eight of their ten scores in round one individual bowling in the 200’s. The hawks were led by Terrel Haas, who rolled a 192 in his first game and then came close to a perfect game with 9 strikes in a row, but couldn’t get through the tough 10th frame and posted a 277 game, for a 469 series. Freshman Jim Shover had another nice meet with a 562 series (227-225), followed by John Miester 450 series (256-194), Logan Marsden 447 series (236—211), Zach Weber 436 series (209-227), Trae Boge 338 series (192-146).
Waverly’s JV girls defeated the Hawks by a score of 2012 – 1865.
West Delaware JV boys defeated the GoHawks by a score of 2411 to Waverly 2364.
The Hawks travel to Cedar Rapids this Friday afternoon for a 3pm meet with Marion.
