Sylvester William Kafer, 75, of Manchester, Iowa, died on Tuesday, December 30, 2014, at St. Luke’s Hospital. He was born on December 6, 1939, in Guttenberg, the son of Clarence and Agnes (Neiland) Kafer. Sylvester, affectionately known as Sal, was the eldest of seven children and graduated from Edgewood High School in 1957. He attended Iowa State University.
He was united into marriage to Darlene Clemen in St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Manchester on August 29, 1961. Six children were then blessed into this marriage. He and his family lived and farmed in Littleport until 1997, when he and Darlene moved into town.
Once in Manchester, Sal sold insurance and securities for Ozark National, was a greeter at Wal-Mart, and drove school busses for the West Delaware Community School District.
Sal was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Manchester and was a member of the Knights of Columbus. He was interested in gardening and loved picking fresh flowers for his wife and friends. He enjoyed traveling all over the world to visit his family.
Survivors include his wife Darlene of Manchester; his six children, Joseph (Becky) Kafer of Manchester, Gerald (Christine) Kafer of Eppelheim, Germany, John (Loretta) of Troy, Illinois, Mary (Drew) Klaus of Keller, Texas, Jeffrey (Nancy) Kafer of Johnston, Iowa, and James (Rachel) Kafer of San Antonio Texas; 16 grandchildren, Lucas Kafer, Andrea Kafer, Alyssa Kafer, Brody Kafer, Anjuli Kafer, Katie Kafer, Jessica Kafer, Melissa Kafer, Stephanie Kafer, Emily Klaus, Jordan Klaus, Joel Kafer, Elizabeth Kafer, Matthew Kafer, Evan Kafer, and Gabriella Kafer; four sisters, Delores Buman of Dubuque, Rita (Mike) Kueter of Dubuque, Diane (Neil) Allen of Davenport, and Karen Kafer of Bettendorf, Iowa; and one brother, Steve (Chris) Kafer of Dubuque.
He is preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Lloyd Kafer, and nephew, Roger Kafer.
