HS Basketball: Wed. 2-18 Girls Results/Thurs. 2-19 Boys Preview

The West Delaware girls basketball team improved to 16-6 with a hard fought 41-38 win over Decorah in Manchester last night in a class 4A region 2 quarterfinal. The Hawks came out quickly offensively and led 12-5 at the end of one quarter. The lead increased to 8 at halftime before a 14-point Decorah 3rd quarter put the Vikings right back into it. The fourth featured the teams swapping leads until the Hawks got up by three and the Vikings were unable to get a shot off at the buzzer. Junior Kristen Wegmann led the way with 18 points and 4 3’s, Sophomore Haley Lyness scored 9, 7 for Kasey Palmer, Emily Thole had 4, Haley Morrison added 2 and 1 for Kara Moorman. Veteran Hawks head coach Harold Shepherd was happy with his teams’ play early on and late in the game as they were able to close it out:

Marion is the next opponent Saturday in the region 2 semifinal in Marion at 7pm. It’s a team the Hawks lost to back on January 6th in Manchester, 54-37. The Indians coaching staff was on hand last night scouting the Hawks:

Mount Vernon 55, Camanche 50

Those two winners will meet Saturday in a 5pm regional final at Linn-Mar high school.

The boys basketball postseason resumes tonight with class 1A and 2A games.

KMCH Sports will have live coverage on KMCH.com from Dyersville with Sports Director Jon Swisher for the district 7 doubleheader.

First up it’ll be the 19-2 4th-ranked Monticello Panthers taking on 13-9 MFL-MarMac at 6:30pm.

Then 14-8 Beckman will play 18-3 Clayton Ridge around 8pm. It matches up two teams who played in a non-conference contest back on Saturday, December 6th in Guttenburg with the Blazers winning 85-55. Beckman survived a first round scare Monday night escaping with a 70-67 overtime win over Anamosa. Twentieth-year head coach Dan Correy says he hopes his team is able to use the momentum and continue that level of play from Monday:
