HS Wrestling: Maquoketa Valley’s Parmely Makes History

By: Jamie Vaske – KMCH Sports

Ryan Parmely has had a remarkable career at Maquoketa Valley on the football field as well as the wrestling mat for the Wildcats and it is all coming to the forefront in this, his senior season. This past week Parmely became the school’s first four time state place winner and first two time state champion as he took home the gold medal at 220 pounds for the second consecutive season. Last season he and teammate Tyler Yonkovic became the Wildcats first ever state champions, and Parmely says that he wants the younger kids to see how far hard work can go:

Parmely posted a career record of 203-6 which is 7th best in state history, 121 career falls which ranks him 18th best, and capped off his impressive career with a 105 match winning streak. Three of his six career losses came in the state tournament with two of those coming from the eventual state champion in his freshman and sophomore seasons. He says it feels good to end on a such high note but wishes the number in the loss column was a little lower:

This past fall Parmely helped lead the Wildcats football team to the playoffs for a third straight year and when he finished in his final game he had compiled 7,067 career rushing yards which was second best in state history and just 75 yards short of the state’s all time record. As an Upper Iowa commit he intends to play football and wrestle for the Peacocks starting in late summer and says that participating in high school athletics especially wrestling has prepared him for the next level:
