The Field of Dreams’ Ghost Players are in Puerto Rico this week. The local group of former semi-pro and pro-ball players depicting the 1920s White Sox baseball players from the movie is traveling through the country on a two-part mission.
Farley resident Paul Scherrman, one of the original Ghost Players who appeared in the movie, came up with the idea. Scherrman started working with Roberto’s Kids several years ago, collecting sports equipment for children in Puerto Rico. He now serves as a regional director for the charity.
The nine Ghost Players who made the trip to Puerto Rico for this cause have donated their time and paid their own expenses. Plus, they’ve pledged five hundred dollars to the Roberto’s Kids organization while on the trip. The Ghost Players used to travel around the world, holding sports camps and comedy shows. Scherrman says it’s been fun to have that experience again, and it seems that the parents and kids in Puerto Rico are enjoying it too.
The Ghost Players arrived in Puerto Rico on Saturday and will head home early Sunday morning. When they return, they’ll begin training for their 25th season of performing at the Field of Dreams Movie Site in Dyersville. (Photos courtesy of Joe Scherrman/Ghost Players Facebook page)
