West Delaware’s new bus facility is complete and they’ll be offering tours to the public during an open house Thursday night. The new bus barn – which is officially known as the Vehicle Maintenance and Storage Facility – is located on Grand Avenue just east of the Delaware County Fairgrounds in Manchester. Superintendent Dr. Kristen Rickey says it’s a much better location than it’s former spot at the high school.
Along with the better location, Rickey says the new bus facility has a lot of other benefits. It provides a larger space and interior wash bay for the district’s 21 buses and 15 smaller vehicles, it provides a central storage area for the school district’s supplies and it puts the West Delaware buildings and grounds staff offices all under one roof. The new facility also gives the district the capability to maintain and repair vehicles much more easily and safely.
West Delaware’s new bus facility was funded through the Physical Plant and Equipment Levy, as well as sales tax funds. Rickey says both of these funds are set aside specifically to maintain and improve the district’s buildings, grounds and vehicles. It was planned into the budget over several years, so they were able to do the project without adding any taxes and without taking on any debt. And the bonus is that the old bus barn can still serve a purpose.
