By Jon Swisher-Sports Director:
The 2015 edition of the West Delaware JV and Varsity softball teams will have to wait to make their home debut on Sill Field because of the rain and possible storms tonight as the Waterloo Columbus JV/Varsity doubleheader has been cancelled for tonight. The Hawks program is under the direction of an entire different coaching staff this season. The new head coach is former Ed-Co and Luther standout Tiffany (Kruse) Rave who has spent the last four seasons as the head coach at Monticello, guiding the Panthers to a first ever state tournament showing in 2013 and building a career record of 108-48. Coach Rave says she has been pleased with the attitude and work ethic that her new players have displayed:
Two seniors graduated from a team that went 31-9 and finished 6th at the state tournament last season. Seven of nine starters from a year ago return to the roster and will provide a bevy of varsity playing experience, Coach Rave says she has been happy with the chemistry shown so far:
The first week of the schedule offers four varsity games with the last three on the road Wednesday and Thursday:
The whole coaching staff is new in Hawk country but not to each other as Rave’s varsity assistant/JV coach, Brooke Stahlberg, is a former standout Monticello athlete and was an assistant for Rave in Monticello the past two seasons. Erin Hosch was Monticello’s ace pitcher in 2013 and Lacey (Tegeler) Galloway played ball at Ed-Co with Coach Rave, who says she is fortunate to have such a well rounded staff to focus on all position aspects:
As a 2006 graduate of Ed-Co, Coach Rave takes over for one of her former coaches along the way in IGHSAU 2014 hall of famer Kevin Schuchmann. Coach Schuchmann, who retired from teaching at West Delaware last year coached Rave as an eight grader at Ed-Co in 2002. Schuchmann coached 29 seasons in total and garnered a career record of 825-430 and 8 state tournament appearances with most of those campaigns coming at Ed-Co. In eleven seasons at West Delaware he had a record of 389-115 and 5 state trips. Coach Rave knows she is inheriting a program built on winning tradition and one of the best in the state the past 11 years:
The Hawks are slated to open up their season Wednesday night in Eldridge, taking on North Scott with a JV/Varsity doubleheader getting underway at 6pm.
