The class 3A 4th-ranked West Delaware Baseball team improved to 32-5 with a tight well played 2-1 win over Independence last night in Manchester. The Hawks broke the scoreless tie game in the fifth inning with an RBI double by Seth Wedewer scoring Dallyn Putz who was hit by a pitch with two outs. The Mustangs answered with a double by Colin Butzlaff which scored Tom Reiff who led off the top of the sixth with a walk. In the bottom of the sixth, a one-out triple by Max Ridenour gave Jordan Nolz the opportunity for the RBI single to score the go-ahead and eventual winning run. Hawks second-year head coach Nate Lahr gave the Mustangs credit for a great effort:
Senior Ty Cassutt had a no-hitter through three innings and only allowed 3 hits, while walking two and striking out five Indee batters. Coach Lahr talked about all three phases of the game played by his team:
The Hawks win a second district title in back-to-back seasons and secured the 9th district championship in program history and advance to their 2nd Substate final in a row. WD will face Waverly-Shell Rock, who beat Charles City 4-2, in a re-match of last years’ Substate game, in Oelwein on Wednesday night.
Independence closed out their season with a mark of 16-26 and lose no seniors.

The Western Dubuque Bobcats ended their season with a back and forth 3-2 loss at home to North Scott. The Bobcats close with a 23-17 mark and say goodbye to 13 seniors.
Tonight class 1A and 2A teams vie for a trip to the State Tournament that starts Friday in Des Moines.
Our featured game will be the class 2A Substate 4 Final in Farley which brings together the two Dubuque County rival schools of #1 36-3 Cascade and #3 23-16 Beckman. The Blazers beat the Cougars 4-1 in the only meeting this season back on June 19th and have won 7 of the last 8 meetings in the series with the Cougars last victory coming in 2011. Beckman tries to get back to the State Tournament for the 17th time in program history and fourth in a row. Cascade is looking for their fourth trip and first since 2004. We’ll also have updates from the class 1A Substate 4 Final in Manchester as 33-10 North Linn faces 21-12 Jesup. The J-Hawks won the previous meeting this season 6-2 back on June 17th. The Lynx will be trying to earn their 1st State baseball appearance ever in program and school district history while Jesup looks for their fourth trip and first since 2003.
