Week two of the high school football season saw five of the twelve KMCH Sports area coverage teams earn victories. Here is a summary of the contests and a look at week three games this coming Friday night when district play begins for most area teams.
In Manchester- West Delaware 45 Maquoketa 10
The Hawks continued their high powered offensive ways and the defense stayed strong in their first home win of the season improving to 2-0. Head coach Doug Winkowitsch talked after the game about his thoughts on the play of his team on both sides of the ball:
QB Max Ridenour threw for 188 yards with 3 touchdowns, completing 11 of 13 passes. Freshman Jordan Spilinek filled the kicking void nicely connecting on all six PAT attempts and made a 31-yard field goal. Running back Coy Roussell had long TD runs of 71 and 82 yards, rushing for 203 yards. With the two touchdowns Roussell tied former Hawk RB Brandon Domeyer for most scores in a career with 41. The Hawks will host Waverly-Shell Rock this week.
In Delhi- Monticello 27 Maquoketa Valley 20
The Panthers got out to a 20-0 halftime lead behind the efforts of sophomore’s, QB Jacob Manternach and RB Max Kelleher. MV rallied with 3 touchdowns after being down 27-6 after the 3rd quarter. The Panther defense stepped up and held the Wildcats scoreless in their several remaining possessions to secure their first victory to move to 1-1, MV dropped to 0-2. Monticello travels to Camanche while Maquoketa Valley heads to Winthrop to take on East Buchanan on Friday night.
In Alburnett- Alburnett 46 North Linn 13
The Lynx started off with a 13-0 lead before the Pirates scored 46 unanswered points and improved to 2-0. North Linn is now 0-2 and will be at Starmont this week.
In Anamosa- Anamosa 49 Oelwein 18
The Blue Raiders totaled nearly 400 yards as they improved to 2-0. They will be on the road in Tipton Friday night.
In Dyersville- Western Dubuque 22 Beckman 12
The Bobcats beat their rival Blazers, the No. 6 team in class 2A for the second consecutive time after being down 12-0 early in the game. Western Dubuque hosts Maquoketa and Beckman will welcome in Oelwein this week.
In West Union- Independence 36 North Fayette Valley 15
The Mustangs advanced to 2-0 by surprising the 2A top-rated and defending state champion TigerHawks. Indee returns home to battle Decorah Friday night.
In Guttenberg- Clayton Ridge 37 Starmont 0
The Stars were shutout for the second week in a row and will face North Linn at home this week.
In Winthrop- Jesup 34 East Buchanan 20
The Buccaneers are 1-1 after a competitive game against the J-Hawks. EB will stay at home and host Maquoketa Valley Friday night.
In Monona- MFL-MarMac 33 Ed-Co 6
The Vikings fell to 0-2 and will be on the road again this week heading to Postville.
In Cascade- Iowa City Regina 62 Cascade 24
The Cougars dropped to 0-2 against the class 1A top-ranked Regals. Cascade will stay in non-district play for one more week heading to Marion Friday night.
