HS Football: Week 3 Preview

By Jon Swisher-Sports Director:

Week 3 of the high school football season kicks off district play tonight for 11 of the 12 KMCH area teams.

Class 3A second-ranked West Delaware hosts No. 5 Waverly-Shell Rock on Brown Field. Both teams enter at 2-0 and are favorites to contend for the top spots in district 3. Hawks head coach Doug Winkowitsch shares his thoughts on the GoHawks:

WINK1 9-11

The Hawks have outscored their first two opponents 95-22 averaging 47.5 points per game which leads all 3A teams in the state. Senior running back Coy Roussell needs one TD to become the player with the most scores in a career. Roussell has ran for 389 yards and leads leads 3A, averaging 10-8 yards per carry. The GoHawks have given up just 13 points in two contests. While district play may bring more excitement for fans, Coach Winkowitsch says the focus for his squad is always focused on playing the best they can against their next opponent:

WINK2 9-11

This week’s honorary captain for Hawk Football is former West Delaware longtime teacher and coach Bill Lester who will be recognized before the game and will join the captains at midfield during the coin toss. Coach explains what Mr. Lester has meant to the program over the years:

WINK3 9-11

Bill Lester will join WD Football play-by-play man Jamie Vaske during halftime for a interview.

The night also has a special meaning as it falls on the 14-year anniversary of 9/11 as we all remember those affected by that national tragedy. The student section will be decked out in our nation’s colors and a moment of silence will occur. Coach Wink comments on the importance of remembering the unforgettable date in our history:

WINK4 9-11

More from coach Winkowitsch can be heard during the Football Friday Night Pregame show starting at 7pm with Sports Director Jon Swisher. Then Jamie, Aaron and Bill will have the call of WD Football around 7:30pm.

Our area online and playback game of the week features Starmont hosting North Linn starting around 7:30pm live on KMCH.com, with Kevin Schuchmann and Tom King, then played back after the Hawks game.
