Arraignment Scheduled for Man Accused in Deadly Dubuque Beating

DUBUQUE, Iowa (AP) – A man accused of sexually assaulting and beating to death a church secretary in Dubuque is scheduled to be arraigned later this month. 19-year old Helmon Betwell of Dubuque was originally supposed to appear in court Friday, but did not. Instead, his arraignment hearing was set for Sept. 21st. Betwell is charged with first-degree murder and first-degree sexual assault for the Sept. 1st death of 66-year old Nancy Krapfl of Dubuque. Krapfl was a native of Farley. Both charges carry maximum sentences of life in prison upon conviction. Betwell also is charged with two counts of third-degree burglary.
