By Jon Swisher-Sports Director:
Seven of the twelve KMCH area coverage teams will be at home tonight for week 6 play of the high school football season with three of those seven celebrating homecoming.
The class 3A No. 2 West Delaware Hawks are one of those three as they will entertain Charles City at Brown Field. The Hawks are 5-0 and 3-0 in district 3, the Comets are 2-3 and 0-2. Hawks head coach Doug Winkowitsch talks about the game plan against a better team than their record shows:
The Hawks won the last season’s meeting in close fashion, 20-14 in Charles City. Coach Wink says his team has stayed focused and still have had fun enjoying their homecoming week:
It’s only fitting on homecoming that tonight’s honorary captain is a former Hawk, member of the 1991 state title team and 1992 graduate, Rick Hilby. Coach Wink talks about the standout who was one of the leading players on the best team in Hawk Football history:
You can hear more from Coach Wink as he joins Sports Director Jon Swisher in their weekly chat on the Football Friday Night Pregame Show at 7pm. Hawks Football coverage live on KMCH and KMCH.com will take the air around 7:30pm with Jamie Vaske, Tom King and Bill Logan. A full interview with Jamie and Mr. Hilby can be heard at halftime.
Our area Online and Playback Game of the Week features two unbeaten class A district 5 teams as Maquoketa Valley travels to play at North Linn. Kevin Schuchmann and Dan McClean will have the call live on KMCH.com and played back after the WD game.
Another key area match-up will take place in Anamosa as the 2A 4th-ranked Blue Raiders host their highway 151 rival Panthers of Monticello. Anamosa is 3-0 in district 4 play while Monti is 1-1. Third-year Panther head coach Jon Kyte says while it’s always a big trophy/special event type game when the two programs meet but again this season district implications are on the line:
In a series that has been heavily dominated by Monticello the last 11 years, Anamosa won last years’ contest 26-13 on the road.
