The class 4A No. 1 West Delaware Hawks advanced on to the State Volleyball Tournament with a 3-0 win over Independence last night in Oelwein. The Hawks came back and won set one in entertaining fashion, 25-23 then cruised to wins of 25-18 and 25-6. Twentieth-year head coach Brett Mather gives the Mustangs great credit especially for their game one effort:
For coach Mather and the program it will be the 10th trip to the State Tourney since 2003, fifth in the past six years and fourth in a row. The team also became the 2nd winningest squad in program history with win number 46,behind the 49-win 2006 team. Coach Mather says the accomplishments are great but the biggest one of all a waits:
The Hawks earned the top seed in the 4A bracket and will face the 8th seed Western Dubuque. The Bobcats swept Clinton last night in Maquoketa, 3-0 and get back to the tournament for the second time ever and first since 2006. That season, the WD’s also met in the first round with the Hawks winning. The quarterfinal match will take place at 4pm Tuesday afternoon at the US Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids.
Center Point-Urbana was victorious over Union, 3-1 in Vinton. The Stormin’ Pointers will battle WaMaC foe Mount Vernon at Noon on Wednesday afternoon in 3A play.
