HS Volleyball: State Tournament Opens Today In Cedar Rapids

By Jon Swisher-Sports Director:

The annual State Volleyball Tournament starts up this afternoon at the US Cellular Center in downtown Cedar Rapids. The 4A top-ranked 46-2 West Delaware Hawks open up their quest for the first state title in program history with a quarterfinal date with their highway 20 WD rival in the 14th-rated 24-12 Western Dubuque Bobcats. For West Delaware it is the program’s 10th trip to state, all since 2003, fifth in six seasons and fourth in a row. The Bobcats are making just their second trip ever since 2006, when that team coincidently ran into the Hawks in first round play. Twentieth-year head coach Brett Mather knows his team will have to be prepared to face the Bobcats who are playing really poised right now. Coach Mather impresses on his players to not take the experience for granted as they try to achieve the highest goal of them all:

MATHER2 11-10

The teams matched up back on September 15th in Epworth with the Hawks winning 3-0. All the coverage live on KMCH and KMCH.com this afternoon with Sports Director Jon Swisher, Joan Salow and Julie Vaske.

The winner will face the winner of the Marion/Lewis Central match that takes place at 6pm.

Class 5A play opens the tournament at noon today.
