HS Football: WD Hawks Back In Semifinals

By Jon Swisher-Sports Director:

The class 3A 2nd-ranked 12-0 West Delaware Football team faces top-rated 12-0 Pella tonight in the second semifinal that will take place at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls.  The Hawks completed another season of not losing a game on Brown Field and became the third team to achieve a 12-0 record and 4th squad to reach 12 wins in program history. The team looks to become the first ever in the program to win 13 games in a season. Twelfth-year head coach Doug Winkowitsch talks about what a special group this is and it is evident with their accomplishments:

WINK1 11-12

The quarterfinal win also was a milestone in Coach Wink’s career as he picked up win #100 at WD. The humble leader denied most of the credit in the achievement:

WINK2 11-12

Coach Wink shares his thoughts on the Dutch of Pella:

WINK3 11-12

For the Hawks it is their first trip to the UNI-Dome since a second-round victory over Webster City in 2011. It’s the first semifinal appearance since a loss to Sioux City Bishop Heelan in 2010 as they try to win a semifinal contest and advance to a championship tilt for the first time since 2005. Coach Wink says they don’t dwell on the different atmosphere even though this group has never played inside, it still will come down to playing their brand of football:

WINK4 11-12

The full Coach Winkowitsch interview as always can be heard when all the coverage starts tonight at 8pm with a live version of the pregame show with Sports Director Jon Swisher. Following that, Jamie Vaske, Aaron Plein and Bill Logan will have the call of the Hawks live on KMCH and KMCH.com.
