The West Delaware wrestling team began its season last night with a home opener against Waverly Shell-Rock inside the Seedorff Gymansium. The meet started at 126 pounds and the Hawks found themselves with an early deficit as the Go-Hawks got out to a 15-0 lead before West Delaware senior Owen Ward used four takedowns on his way to a 14-5 major decision to get the Hawks on the board. West Delaware later got pins from senior Coy Roussell, and junior Kaleb Zieser, but that was all the Hawks would get as Waverly Shell-Rock won 11 matches, six of those coming by fall and they go on to beat West Delaware 56-16. Head coach Jeff Voss says the Go-Hawks were a good test to see where the team is at early in the season.
The Hawks will host the Bob Murphy Invitational starting at 11 am Saturday, this years tournament will feature nine teams including the host Hawks, and coach Voss comments that the addition of four teams will be a great learning experience for the younger wrestlers.
Coverage of the Bob Murphy Invitational on Saturday is live on KMCH and KMCH.com with Jamie Vaske and Roger Reed.
On the schedule for tonight Maquoketa Valley will travel to Cascade for the Cascade Duals where they will face Clayton Ridge, Maquoketa, and Cascade.
