The Western Dubuque wrestling team won their first ever WaMaC Conference team title Saturday at Vinton Shellsburg High School as all 14 Bobcats placed in the top eight in their weight classes, including five individual champions as they were 61 1/2 points better than 2nd place Independence. Juniors Jacob Close at 106 pounds, Bradan Birt at 120 pounds, Luke Kluesner at 170 pounds, Max Lyon at 182 pounds, and Aaron Costello at heavyweight all won titles for the Bobcats. Western Dubuque head coach Paul Cleary said it was the whole team’s effort that helped them claim the tournament crown:
Independence had three individual champions as the senior trio of Drew Davis at 138 pounds, Jake Juhl at 160 pounds, and Matt McMillan at 195 pounds won titles for the Mustangs. Freshman Jackson Feldmann at 132 pounds and sophomore Luke Hageman at 152 pounds finished as runner-ups to lead Beckman to a 7th place finish, their highest WaMaC finish since joining the conference in 2004. West Delaware senior Owen Ward led the Hawks to an 11th place finish by finishing 2nd at 138 pounds, and Anamosa senior Dylan Wood finished in 5th place at 195 pounds. East Buchanan finished in 3rd place at the Tri-Rivers Conference tournament at Maquoketa Valley High School on Saturday, as senior Griffin Cabalka led the Bucs as he claimed the 195 pound title while junior Gannon Cook at 113 pounds, senior Kyle Keating at 138 pounds, and senior heavyweight Jordan Lentz all finished 2nd. Maquoketa Valley finished in 4th place as senior Alec McDowell won the 182 pound championship and junior Eric Heims claimed the 220 pound title. North Linn ended the day in 5th place as juniors Brock Henderson at 113 pounds and heavyweight Kyler Schott both won titles for the Lynx. For complete results follow the link to Track Wrestling.
The Starmont wrestling team finished in 4th place at the Upper Iowa Conference meet at South Winneshiek High School as senior and returning state qualifier Kody Kleve won the 113 pound conference title. The River Valley Conference wrestling tournament took place in Durant Saturday. Cascade finished in 7th place and had one champion as freshman Derick Koppes won the 120 pound title.
