The Independence wrestling team will be making its third straight appearance in the class 2A state dual wrestling tournament as they took two duals last night and hosted a regional dual inside Independence High School. The Mustangs opened the night against Gilbert and from 126 through 195 pounds they won nine matches in a row, eight of those coming by fall as they went on to defeat the Tigers 60-15. Independence head coach Michael Doyle says that’s the kind of momentum he was looking for in the dual:
In the second dual Independence took on Denver-Tripoli who defeated Union, LaPorte City 39-30 in the other semifinal and the Mustangs picked up where they left off in the first dual as they had seven more pins and won 10 of the 14 matches on their way to a 57-18 win. With the win they advance to the state duals next Wednesday at the Wells Fargo arena in Des Moines where they look improve upon their 5th place finish from last season as they are seeded 5th and will open up with Clarion-Goldfield-Dows in the first round starting at 9:00 am. Coach Doyle says he looks forward to seeing his team compete for a state title:
East Buchanan was in Alburnett last night for a class 1A regional dual as they took on Dike-New Hartford in the first round and lost the dual 44-32.
