HS Wrestling: Independence, East Buchanan To Compete In Regional Duals

By Jamie Vaske-Associate Director of Sports:

The Independence wrestling team is looking to make it back to the class 2A state duals for the third consecutive season and improve on their 5th place finish from 2015, as they host a regional dual tonight in Independence. The Mustangs will wrestle in one semifinal against Gilbert with the winner of that dual to face the winner of the other semifinal between Union, LaPorte City and Denver Tripoli for a chance to move on to the state duals next Wednesday in Des Moines. With a traditionally strong program awaiting them in the final head coach Michael Doyle has told his team the first dual is the most important:

Coach Doyle also comments that his team is excited for the challenge of wrestling an opponent unfamiliar to them:

Wrestling begins at 6:00 pm tonight and can be heard live on 94.7 KMCH and on KMCH.com with Roger Reed and Jamie Vaske.

In class 1A East Buchanan will travel to Alburnett tonight as they qualified for the regional duals by finishing in 2nd place last Saturday at the sectional at Starmont. The Buccaneers will wrestle in the semifinal against Dike-New Hartford with the winner to face the winner between Alburnett and Iowa City, Regina.
