By Jamie Vaske-Associate Director of Sports:
2013 West Delaware graduate Dean Broghammer experienced a lot of success while wrestling in high school, with winning an individual state title to go along with winning a team championship in his senior season. That success has continued into his collegiate career as the Grand View University sophomore heavyweight looks to improve upon his 4th place finish as a freshman while also aiding his team to win their fifth straight NAIA national championship today and tomorrow at the Kansas Expo Centre in Topeka Kansas. Broghammer says the success at West Delaware has prepared him for the success at Grand View:
A 51-8 record as a freshman Broghammer went 4-2 at the national tournament last season at the same venue as this year’s tournament. Broghammer comments that the experience of being on the big stage will help him achieve his goal of winning a national title:
He enters the tournament seeded 4th with a 32-5 record and placed 2nd at the regional qualifier at Missouri Valley College in Marshall, Missouri behind top ranked and defending national NAIA heavyweight champion Gabi Musallam of Missouri Valley. Broghammer and Musallam are on the same side of the bracket this weekend and could potentially meet in the semifinals which would be the third time the two will have met in two years and Broghammer says his training since regionals has him ready for nationals:
Broghammer recieved a first round bye and pinned 14th ranked Stephen Wilbert of Warner Pacific (Oregon) in 3:26 and will now face Tyler Smith of Cumberland (Tennessee) in session 2 which gets underway Friday night at 6:00 pm and can be followed on the link below to Track Wrestling.
