HS Boys State Basketball: Cougars Advance To Semifinals With Convincing Win

By Jon Swisher-Sports Director:

The 4th-seeded Cascade Cougars advanced to their second semifinal contest in three seasons with a smothering 60-27 victory over the 5th-seeded Osage inside Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines last night. A back and forth game ensued early in the first quarter, with the score tied at 5, the Cougars went on a 12-0 run and never looked back outscoring the Green Devils 55-22 and holding them to just 12 first half points and 2 in the fourth period. Veteran head coach Al Marshall in his 48th season talked about all the positives in the lopsided win:

MARSHALL1 3-8

Senior Devin Green led the offensive charge with 21 points, leaving him 34 short of tying the all-time scoring record in Cascade Basketball program history, that mark is held by 1999 Cougar graduate Craig Callahan with 1,401 career points who went on to play at Division 1 UNC-Wilmington. Senior Jarett Knepper added 11, Johnny Supple 8, Trace Hoffman 7 and Gannon O’Brien 6. Cascade earned their 5th state tournament victory in the program’s 8th appearance, all since 1993. The Cougars move into the second round Thursday afternoon at 2pm against the number 8 seed Pella Christian who upset the 2A top-seed Dike-New Hartford, 59-52 in the final game of day one last night.
